Today saw the last work party of 2019, and in traditional style members provided a good spread of festive food and drink to share with visitors, along with a nice log burner to keep the winter chill away. We were delighted to see many supporters, friends and passers-by join us at the station to help eat all the food. Luckily it was a dry and bright day after all the recent rain, although many fields in the Stour Valley below the station were flooded. We even managed a bit of work too, including hedge trimming behind the ‘down’ platform and continued clearance work on the bank behind the ‘up’ platform.
Our Santa’s post box at the station was a big hit with local children again this year, with 80 letters being posted. The Spetisbury Station Project would like to thank all its supporters over the past year and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year 2020. Details of our work parties next year can be found here.
Today’s work party consisted of Dean, Kevin, Rob and Sally, and we were pleased to see Francis (one of our gardener ladies) up at the station as well. Recently the team has been clearing vegetation from the embankment behind the ‘up’ platform and forming a neat hedge at the top, and today we carried on with this task whilst Sally tidied up one of the flower borders.
A couple of years ago we provided two replica running in name boards, one for each platform, with funds kindly donated by Spetisbury Parish Council. We used high quality timber and paint to do a good long-lasting job, but sadly we noticed last winter that both signs were already starting to deteriorate. The more exposed one on the ‘down’ platform now looks in a very sorry state and when drier and warmer weather returns next year we will have to look at renovating both running in boards. A replica gradient post similar to that which used to stand at the southern end of the ‘up’ platform has been made by the team and this will be installed next year.
As has become customary, the station has been decked out in festive decorations including Santa’s post box, which is popular with local school children. Each letter is replied to by one of Santa’s little helpers of course. Don’t forget, the next work party on Sunday 22nd December will be the last one of the year, so why not join the team between 10am and 1pm for seasonal refreshments. A list of next year’s work party dates can be seen here.
