work party 22nd February

With a favourable weather forecast, we were hopeful of getting on with some work today. But sadly it was not meant to be, with persistent rain arriving late morning so we called it a day by lunchtime. And typically, it brightened up a few hours later! It was good though to see spring flowers showing their heads at the station. We are a bit behind due to all the wet weather so far this year, so we are looking forward to drier conditions very soon. Our new sign asking for more volunteers has already worked as Sue has now joined our friendly team of gardening ladies. Our next work party will be on Sunday 8th March – that weekend will also mark the 60th anniversary of the closure of the Somerset & Dorset railway in 1966. So what better reason to come and visit us?

work party 8th February

It was good to get back to the station again today, after both of the January work parties were cancelled due to the rain. Everything is still very wet but we managed to put in some primroses by the station nameboard. We also blocked a breach in the fence separating the platform from the field behind, to deter trespassing on the farmer’s property. It was good to chat with a couple of people who’s ancestor used to work as a railway platelayer at Spetisbury in the late 1800s. We look forward to learning more about this person to add to the history of the station.
